Created on my iPhone with the slow motion camera "Reel Moments". This is 1.5 hours condensed into 1:31 minutes. Note that in the first half, the high elevation clouds mover East to West, while the lower elevation clouds move West to East!

Again, I chose to go to B&W for this image, allowing it to rely entirely on the graphic nature of the image and its broad range of sensual greys. I think this is one of the more successful images of the lot, personally.

All of the post processing was done in Lightroom, which I feel did a much better job than Photoshop for rendering the range of tones and the image tint duotoning. (Highlights = cool, shadows = warm)

Because I placed a lot of emphasis on the graphic qualities of the images I did for this assignment, I decided with this photograph to eliminate the color from it, because as we all know, reducing an image to black, white and greys forces the viewer to see the image in graphic terms; it is no longer a Tulip, it is a design.

I've been very busy and have barely had time to shoot this week's assignment. I do have a collection of images shot now but still need to edit and process 'em. However, I do have these two finished.

The idea here is to create an abstract using shallow depth of field and playing with color and light. I have several selections I like a lot from this shoot, and will post others ASAP. I hope you like 'em. :-)

This week's photo assignment with the C&C Photography group is as follows:

#1 Take one image, as the "eye sees it"-straight ahead/straight on #2 Stand on a chair and get a birds eye view- one image.

#3 One close up or a different angle all together.

#4 Shoot off center using negative space and see how that plays in with the overall composition.

#5 Extra "Un focus"- that's right, make sure you DO NOT have the still in focus....it can create painterly impressionistic feel (also this is harder to do than you might think, the eye is trained to see everything in focus)

Unfortunately Blogger has organized my photos in reverse order, so it starts with #5 at the top. Ugh!

I didn't do a very good job with #4 and the negative space issue, in part because my "still life" limited things. I will post an alternative shot I selected for #4, but it could easily have been #2 or #3 as well!

So, whats the story here? About a year ago a friend of mine was cleaning out the basement of a neighbor and apparently the home owner used to be an orthodontist. On the curb was a DUMPSTER FULL of box after box of these plaster casts! I asked if I could take a few, which I did. I have had these in a drawer ever since, just waiting for an opportunity to be worked into some project. So, this was the occasion.

Oh, and this is an homage of sorts to my friend Spring Hurlbut, whose work I love.

C&C Project Status

I have had a crippling headache on and off for 36 hours now and as a result I have not yet done my project for this week. My apologies to the group. I feel much better this AM (although sluggish) and expect to do my project at some point through the day. I can't promise I will post it before the end of the day though.

The Elephant's Tale.

He woke as he did every morning and climbed up onto the Elephant, strapping himself onto the animal's back with a belt woven from burlap and gold. All day long he rode around the room, his back to the Elephant's back; they both sweat and a bond forms between these skins. Every day they explore the room, for years it goes on. This is normal, he says.

The Elephant says nothing, continues to navigate, wearing marks on the walls where he brushes against paint and wood. Once, a table was jostled and something glass fell and broke. By now it was ground to sand on the floor and nobody could remember what it was before it was sand.

One day he thought, wait....who is feeding this creature??, and worry was born; disease found a home. Can an Elephant live for decades with nothing to eat but carpet and a few bits of furniture? The Elephant's spine wore a track in his back and vertebra were pushed out of place. He doubted he could walk like a normal person at that point. He'd probably never have the opportunity to find out.

OK, so I did one last shoot using my D90, just because it was too tempting and I wanted to have a "backup" option in case the iPhone shoot failed. So, here is my trusty assistant Oonagh helping out on the shoot. Enjoy!

C&C Photo Assignment, part two.

This is my second group of images for the C&C Photo Assignment for this week. Here is a composite of four of my favorite color selections.

This studio scenario was quite comical, and not at all as complicated as the final results might suggest. The photo was done on a piece of white seamless paper last night, with a single desk lamp as the light source, suspended on a string above the set. The focal spotlight effect was achieved by positioning a quart Mason jar above the egg at about 5" above it! The color effects were obtained by using different "films" in the Hipstamatic photo app on my iPhone. (Yes, 90% of the image process was done on my iPhone!)

The composite was created in Photoshop (CS4) and some tonality adjustments were made in CS4 as well. However, the images are almost exactly as they appeared as imports from the phone. I hope you like these. :-)

Here is a solo shot I edited into the mix, just for its outrageous color. Again, an iPhone shot, with minimal contrast and sharpening done in Photoshop.

C&C Photo Assignment #1

Today is the day the C&C Photo Collective posts their assignment results for this, our first group project: The Egg. As I am wont to do, I read the assignment a week ago and my brain spent several days chewing on the idea. During that time, certain details of the assignment became muddied and/or distorted. The result is that my results have deviated somewhat from the planned course and do not entirely meet the requirements of the assignment, for which I apologize to my instructors. *grins*

I created these images within a 12 hour period, and I chose to limit myself to a particular photographic tool: my iPhone 3Gs, equipped with the Hipstamatic image processing app, allowing me to make all major creative decisions solely on my iPhone. (Minor contrast adjustments and the grid assembly were done on my laptop in CS4, not on the phone) I thoroughly enjoyed limiting myself to the iPhone camera and found it freed me to experiment in ways I may not have done had I used my D90. In fact, the Hipstamatic application turned out to be a very liberating creative tool, with its various lenses and film effects designed to emulate the 1960's plastic cameras such as the Diana (Yes, I had one!) and the Helga. Remember those?!

Enough of the blah blah blah, lets show some images. The first is a composite of B&W selections, which were from the very first set I did the morning of the shoot. I have at least two other composites to post, but being rushed for time this morning, I may have to post these separately this afternoon. I hope you like these.
